Artist Sjaak Smetsers – AbrahamArt Gallery & Art Lease

Visual artist Sjaak Smetsers was born in Venlo in 1954. In his studio in Tegelen he has created an army of fabulous figures. The predominantly polychrome creatures with beautifully finished heads are consciously constructed. As a super technician Sjaak Smetsers assembles his unique figures bringing them to life step by step. He proposes using different disciplines and various techniques together from very different and sometimes even contradictory materials.

As a playful alchemist Sjaak Smetsers conceives fresh combinations for each new work. He pours bronze himself if time permits; he also processes copper, steel or silver, (re)melting various types of glass, applies ingenious gold leafs, sheets of silver and metal foil and also manufactures them to apply in ceramics. In addition, he grinds, rubs, polishes and applies patina techniques to all his bronze works personally. With patience and devotion he produces color nuances which we don’t easly find in nature.

A number of artworks are involved by striking belts. Sometimes those belts are made of red copper. Under some belts flat glass is glued, that is subtly worked with hammers and pliers to create a crutching effect. Co-inspired by the innovative Romans who in this region already two thousand years ago miraculously introduced diverse glass varieties, Smetsers dedicates a lot of time on the artistic transformation of various types of glass.

The three-dimensional mythical creatures that Sjaak Smetsers creates, guard a long West European cultural tradition. The mythical animals were already present in the European culture in the eleventh, twelfth, thirteenth and fourteenth century. They are mainly seen on apocalyptic performances on portals or on arches of Romanesque and Gothic churches.

Around 1500 we can see these creatures in the extraordinary work of Jheronimus Bosch and later also in the family Brueghel. In the second half of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century we started to see fabulous creatures, more morbid and witty, that emerged in the works of symbolist and surrealist artists such as Max Ernst and Joan Miró. After the Second World War, we find imaginary mythical animals in all kinds of variants – from aggressive to naive – back to the Cobra artists Karel Appel, Eugène Brands, Constant, Corneille, Asger Jorn, Lucebert and Anton Rooskens.

The special, contemporary work of Sjaak Smetsers connect with a long tradition of art but at the same time reveals highly original style. And that is not a myth. In addition, Sjaak is just a very congenial and accessible man, artist and entrepreneur.
