In 1994, Koons launched the Celebration series, inspired by special events throughout the calendar year, such as birthdays, weddings, and holidays, which he detaches from their everyday context and magnifies into contemporary archetypes.

The porcelain edition references the ten-meter-tall stainless steel original, Balloon Dog (1994–2000), which replicates a balloon twisted into the shape of a dog with meticulous attention to detail on a monumental scale. The inflatable balloon evokes memories of childhood and playful innocence. Koons transforms the object, which symbolizes the fleeting pleasures of life, into something permanent and timeless.
